John, Obviously there are times when finesse fishing is the ticket.... Do you think there are times when finesse fishing can work against you in a tournament situation?

Yes....I think size of fish you're catching with this technique can certainly dictate leaving this technique or just using it to round out a limit early on and then moving to something that will produce bigger fish. Also weather conditions can dictate a need to switch...if it is particularly windy it may be a a technique that makes the bite harder to detect because you can't feel the bait any longer. I think it is always good to know going into a tournament situation what size bag it is going to take to win and then being willing to adjust in the moment if a technique that was working before is not producing the kind of fish needed to win.

I would also add, when the bite is really on finesse fishing can be too slow and you will not be able to keep pace with the guys number or size that are power fishing when the bass are slamming!
