Pre-Fish Report Mississippi River Pool 2

Saturday the 2nd Rich Lindgren and I hit Pool 2 on the Mississippi River to pre fish for our tournament there on the 17th of May. Each of us had been on the water once before but neither of us produced much. So we decided to head in the opposite direction of where we had gone before.
We found several productive spots and both caught a limit plus some for the day. I had an 11 pound limit for 5 fish which is decent but I believe I will need at least 18 pounds to finish in the top 3. All of my fish came off jigs or soft plastics. I was able to establish a good pattern of lures and colors to throw on tournament day. Rich and I are in boat 3 for the take off and should be able to make it to our two main spots early.
We also established some back up spots which produced fish for us and I have no doubt we will both weigh in a limit. We had water temperatures from 54 to 61 degrees during the day. Given the changing weather conditions this time of year in Minnesota there is no way to know just yet what we will face on tournament day.
It was great to get out and actually have a successful day on the water. I will blog a full report after the tournament.
Have a Great Day on the Lake!

John,
This year I am running a for fun bass derby for bloggers. A fish must be 17 inches or 3lbs to qualify and it is best 5 fish limit. Rich has registered the 1st two fish from your day on the water pre-fishing. If you got any fish that qualify. Let me know at:
http://basspundit.blogspot.com/ or just mention on your blog fish that qualify and I should pick it up that way.

Does the Mississippi River flow southeast or southwest?

I used to think river fishing was not that hard, wow was I wrong. The current really makes it hard, especially when you are used to small inland reservoirs.

The fish doesn’t matter so much. It’s where you find it that counts. Note everything about that spot, the how, why and where. Your looking for patterns here but note anything peculiar to eg: Fish took lure whilst it was sitting on the bottom ‘cos I was having a coffee etc.

Thursday we spent the morning checking both main river and backwater areas. Despite the heavy rains on Wednesday, we found the clarity to be alright and the fish willing to bite. Covering a lot of water was the key, because when you found one biting, there were more biting too!

The Mississippi River is an incredible resource. Pool 2 contains the best population of quality walleye and sauger in the area. The most popular time to fish walleye and sauger is in the fall and winter, when fish are concentrated in the area between the St. Paul airport and the I-694 bridge.
